Pathogen swab tubes being placed in a dry block incubator

Pathogen Testing

HACCP Plus supplies pathogen testing kits that help food and beverage manufacturers detect harmful bacteria before products leave the facility. Our pathogen testing range covers Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli and other foodborne pathogens using rapid SwabSURE detection kits and environmental swabs designed for in-house use. Bringing pathogen testing in-house shortens turnaround times, strengthens environmental monitoring and provides clear evidence of due diligence for your HACCP food safety program. Shop pathogen testing kits online with fast shipping across Australia.

SwabSURE pathogen detection kit range

Our SwabSURE range makes it simple to check surfaces for Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli and coliforms without waiting days for an external laboratory.

  • SwabSURE Listeria Detection Kit: detects Listeria spp. on surfaces and drains, with presumptive results in 24 to 48 hours
  • SwabSURE Salmonella Detection Kit: environmental Salmonella testing for surfaces, with presumptive results in 18 to 24 hours
  • SwabSURE E. coli & Coliform Detection Kit: checks for coliform indicator organisms and E. coli in 18 to 24 hours

Each kit has two parts: a pre-moistened swab that neutralises cleaning chemicals and picks up bacteria from dry surfaces, and a sensitive detection media that changes colour if the target organism is present. You will need an incubator. The Cultura Incubator or the MiniT Dry Block Incubator from our lab equipment range both suit SwabSURE testing.

How a rapid test works: swab sampling, sample collection and detection

Five simple steps take you from a dirty drain to a clear answer, all on site.

01

Sampling: swab a defined area, such as a 10 x 10 cm surface, a drain or a hard-to-clean joint.

02

Sample collection: return the swab to its tube and combine it with the detection media.

03

Incubation: place the tube in an incubator at the set temperature.

04

Detection: check for a colour change that shows the target pathogen may be present.

05

Action: record the result, then clean, retest or send a sample to an accredited laboratory for confirmation.

Why microbiological and microbial testing matters: contamination risks for food and beverage businesses

Listeria, Salmonella and E. coli can survive in drains, floors and equipment, then spread to food. Regular environmental testing helps you:

  • Verify cleaning and sanitising at every step of the production process
  • Find harbourage sites before they become a contamination risk
  • Show due diligence and support regulatory compliance and your HACCP plan
  • Reduce the risk of costly recalls and protect consumers
  • Support shelf life and product safety for dairy, meat, ready meals and other high-risk foods

Choosing the right pathogen test kit: in-house or laboratory testing

  • Environmental monitoring: SwabSURE kits for surfaces and drains
  • In-process and finished product testing: plates, or an accredited lab for regulatory testing
  • Water and beverage: filter-based methods and coliform tests
  • High-risk sites: combine in-house rapid test kits with regular laboratory verification

Pathogen testing questions

How pathogen kits fit with indicator testing, and what these kits are not for.

Microbiology testing solutions: pathogens vs indicator organisms, colony counts, sponge and filter methods

Pathogen tests look for a specific harmful microorganism. Indicator organisms, such as coliforms, Enterobacteriaceae, total aerobic count and yeast and mould, show how hygienic your process is. Most food safety programs use both. For counts, our Petrifilm and Compact Dry plates use dehydrated, sterile media in place of traditional agar. For targeted pathogen checks, SwabSURE kits give a simple yes or no on a swab. Some sites also use sponge swabs, filter methods for water, or rapid allergen tests to round out their testing.

Not for infection testing: these are not COVID-19 rapid antigen, RSV or antigen combo tests

Our kits are for food and environmental testing only. They are not medical diagnostics and are not for self-testing. They don't detect infection in people. If you need COVID-19 rapid antigen tests, RSV tests or an antigen combo test, speak with a pharmacy or your healthcare provider.

Do I need an incubator?

Yes. SwabSURE kits need to be held at a set temperature to give a result. The Cultura Incubator and the MiniT Dry Block Incubator both suit these kits.
